A quarter of Japanese under 40 are virgins according to a recent survey. Japanese and Swedish researchers say that the proportion of Japanese that have not had heterosexual intercourse aged 18-39 has risen from one in five in 1992 to one in four today.
This increase is blamed on poor sex education, socialising in groups and hikikomori or social recluses.
Women also have an unrealistic expectation of income for potential partners. Consequently the fertility rate of 1.43 births per womanis far below the re[lacement rate of 2.1.
As older people live longer the cost of their care falls on fewer and fewer tax payers. the population is forecast to fall from 126 million today to 88 million by 2065.
