Last week it was announced that over half the electricity in Iceland powers the computer mining of crypto currency and especially Bitcoin.
Today senior scientists at SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligenve are complaining that they can’t find enough high power GPU’s, graphical processing units that they use to analyse the signals received back from their high powered radio telescopes that analyse the faintest of data at the edges of our ranges to progress our understanding of the universe.
SETI have had to curtail their activities at two observatories so far in the USA and in Australia.
Normally the market makes pretty smart decisions about how to allocate smart resources but on a occasion an entirely false market can dominate forcing a mid allocation. This is evidently an example of that.
